Understanding the Next Generation NCLEX

The NGN is here to challenge your clinical judgment. With more case studies and advanced question types like matrix grids, drag-and-drop, and highlighting, you’ll need to think critically at every step.

What’s New in the NCLEX?

Case Studies: Patient scenarios that require decision-making based on clinical information.

Matrix Grids: Multiple responses across several categories.

Drag-and-Drop: Sorting information into the correct order or category.

Highlighting: Identifying key information in a passage.

Study Strategies, Building Clinical Judgment Skills, and Final Tips

The NGN is about clinical judgment. Memorization won’t cut it—you need to practice real-world decision-making.

Study Tips:

Active recall: Quiz yourself regularly.

Practice tests: Complete as many practice questions as possible.

Simulate the exam: Practice in test-like conditions.

Critical Care Scenarios - Tips & Bedside Assessment

Critical care requires quick thinking and accurate decision-making. You’ll manage conditions like sepsis, shock, and respiratory failure.

Key Interventions:

Sepsis: Early recognition and aggressive treatment with fluids and antibiotics.

Shock: Identify the type of shock (hypovolemic, cardiogenic, septic) and provide the appropriate treatment.

Respiratory failure: Ensure airway patency and support oxygenation.

Sample Question#1

You are assigned to care for four patients. Highlight the most urgent finding requiring immediate nursing intervention:

Patient 1: Post-op with moderate pain (5/10).

Patient 2: COPD patient with SpO2 88% on room air, BP 95/60 mmHg, HR 110 bpm.

Patient 3: Diabetic patient with a blood glucose of 180 mg/dL.

Patient 4: Pneumonia patient on antibiotics with stable vital signs.

Answer:

Patient 2: COPD with SpO2 88%, BP 95/60 mmHg, HR 110 bpm

Rationale: The COPD patient has low oxygen saturation and is experiencing respiratory distress, making this the priority over other stable patients.

Great job! Now, please review the following 5 NGN test taking strategies provided by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2023.

5 Next Generation NCLEX Preparation Strategies for Test-Taking:

1. Understand the New Question Types

Familiarize yourself with the new types of questions on the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN), such as case studies, enhanced hotspot questions, and matrix grid questions. These focus on clinical judgment and decision-making. Utilize practice exams and online resources that mirror these formats.

2. Master Clinical Judgment Skills

The NGN emphasizes the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM). Develop critical thinking by practicing scenarios that require prioritization, patient care decisions, and evidence-based responses.

3. Use Active Recall and Spaced Repetition

Incorporate active recall techniques like flashcards and practice questions, combined with spaced repetition to reinforce knowledge over time. Apps like UWorld and Kaplan offer these tools tailored to the NGN format.

4. Practice Time Management

The NGN includes complex case studies, which can be time-intensive. Practice pacing yourself with timed practice tests to ensure you can complete all sections within the allotted time.

5. Utilize Study Groups and Tutoring Services

Collaborate with peers to discuss case scenarios and rationales. Professional tutoring services, like those provided by My Two Cents Community Help Services, can offer personalized support to address your weaknesses and improve your test-taking skills.
